Zamzam water is holy water that can only be found in Makkah. During the 10 days of Ramadan, as much as 8 million liters of Zamzam water have been distributed to worshipers or visitors.

Reporting from Arab News, Wednesday (13/4/2022) the eight million liters were distributed in three million single-use bottles. How to maintain zamzam water

For centuries how to protect the Zamzam well is still done manually. The most extensive Well Cleaning was carried out in 1400 AH by order of the late king, Khalid Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud,

However, since the reign of the late King Abdullah, there has been a big breakthrough regarding Zamzam water. In 2013, the opening of the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Zamzam Water Project (KPZW) which was built at a cost of SR700 million (USD 187 million), revolutionized the way water from wells is extracted, monitored, treated and distributed.

Water is pumped through underground stainless steel pipes to the KPZW factory in Kudai, five kilometers south of the Grand Mosque. Here, it is purified and sterilized, using filters and ultraviolet light, and the entire operation is controlled and monitored in a high-tech central control room.

After treatment, the water is transferred to one of two storage reservoirs. The first, at Kudai, has a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters and supplies water via pipes to a drinking fountain at the Grand Mosque in Makkah.

From Kudai, a fleet of tanker trucks transports up to 400,000 liters a day to the King Abdulaziz Sabeel Reservoir in Medina, which has a capacity of 16,000 cubic meters and supplies water to the Prophet’s Mosque.

This modern method greatly changes the old unprofessional methods, such as pumping, filtering and distribution. Also in the past the bottling was done manually and caused pollution. With this latest project, Zamzam water is packaged in official containers of 5 and 10 liters and goes through a hygienic and modern process.
